NIGO and Nike Are Rumoured To Join Forces In 2024

NIGO- a name too impactful in the world of streetwear to overlook. Over the past 30 years, his career has been remarkable, beginning with the launching of NOWHERE in Harajuku with Jun Takahashi and the founding of A Bathing Ape (BAPE), to the founding of HUMAN MADE and his appointment as the Artistic Director at KENZO. And now it looks like the legend has bigger plans for the coming year. According to sources, NIGO and Nike are rumoured to join forces in 2024.

Brushing off the past

Checks have been chosen over stripes by the Japanese fashion designer, who has also collaborated with adidas for the previous 20 years. He is best known for creating the Bape Sta, an Air Force 1-inspired style that had numerous general releases and exclusive colourways in the early 2000s. After establishing the streetwear company in 1993, he decided to sell Bape to the Hong Kong-based fashion behemoth I.T Group for roughly $2.8 million 18 years later. He departed the company formally in 2013.

A recap ahead of the team-up: lawsuit, legal battles and more!

In addition to BAPE’s affiliation with adidas, Nike and BAPE are currently engaged in a legal dispute on the Nike Air Force 1 Low’s trademark design. According to Nike, the BAPESTA (BAPE’s AF1 imitator) violates the design and results in consumer confusion.

The Nike v. BAPE lawsuit recently received an update, which revealed that “Nike’s in-house counsel and Nike’s V.P. of footwear flew to Japan twice to meet with BAPE’s leadership.” Following the discussions, Nike allegedly asked the company to stop making BAPESTAs.ce and offered a potential licensing agreement.

So yeah, that’s the tea you needed to know in light of the partnership ahead. However, the feud is not stopping the humble beginnings of the duo, so read on to find out what’s in the works!
