Nike Doernbecher Freestyle Collection of 2022

In 2004, Nike and the OHSU Doernbecher Kid’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, joined hands for its annual Doernbecher Freestyle event— a charity-orientated enterprise that raises over $30 million and endows over 100 patients the chance to design their sneaks.

Michael Wilson, Zoe Taaffe, Sam David Phelps, Ayman Wamala, Maylee Phelps, Cidni O’Brien, Catalina Vazquez are the seven young artists selected for the enterprise’s 17th exhibition. They showcase their innovative design grades through their separate instalments and lighten their private life stories, medical journeys, and private interests. This year’s line involves footwear silhouettes and apparel pieces spanning the lifestyle and performance categories from both Nike and Jordan brands.

2 months after Michael “Spitfire” Wilson was born, he was diagnosed with Krabbe disease. This very uncommon genetic condition eliminates the protective coating of nerve cells in the brain and nervous system. The disease is most likely fatal, but Michael had a hero in his corner: his older brother Marshall.

Michael is a happy kid who loves aeroplanes, sharks, and mac ‘n cheese. His Air Jordan 5 Retro Low shows it. A fierce shark slides along the side, while a mac n’cheese print is layered throughout the suede upper and cool changeable patches on the tongue. Force the “eject loop” on the heel tab when you’re ready to take off.

“They have done an awesome job at taking good care of me and fixing me up,” Michael Wilson said. “If it were not for my team, I would not be in the world today.”

Zoe Taaffe is one in a million. When she became a sophomore in her high school, she suffered from an autoimmune disease that created severe inflammation of the blood vessels. Stabilizing Zoe needed multiple blood transfusions, plasma transfusions, steroids, and chemotherapy. While the long hospital stays weren’t fun, they provided Zoe with an up-close look at her chosen profession.

Zoe’s positivity is visible everywhere on her Nike Dunk Low. It’s a cool tribute to her favourite Oregon Ducks, but you’ll notice Zoe’s name cleverly hidden in the zebra-like print. Look closer, and you’ll realize that it’s more than a zebra print; it’s a nod to stretch marks created on Zoe’s body.

Zoe’s feel-good shoe also gives a glow-in-the-dark outsole, an Oregon Duck-influenced nursing symbol on the sockliner, the word fearless on the laces and changeable Velcro Swooshes that let you change up your look.

Sam David Phelps’s take on the LeBron 19 brings the shiny bling with metallic gold panels, lighting bolts and his very own sporty-ish wheelchair logo. It also features a special detail: Nike’s first-ever airbag pod, which encapsulates Sam’s initials, birth year, and go-to mantra: Never Back Down. “I want to influence people to never quit on their dreams,” Sam said. “If you set your mindset to it, there’s no barrier to what you are capable of doing.” 

Sam David and his family went to Portland from Mississippi so that he and his sister could get state-of-the-art care from well-renowned OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and Sam David says he’s so grateful they did. “I was a little bit afraid at first to see all of my doctors and therapists,” he admitted the fact that he was terrified. “But everyone has been so well to me. I’m grateful for all the time and energy they’ve taken to help me get better along my health journey.”

Ayman was born in Kenya and was diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia very early. “When it was bad, it felt like I got hit with a sledgehammer. When his family went to Portland four years ago, Ayman began treatment at OHSU Doernbechercher Children’s Hospital.

And as for his signature Nike Blazer Mid ’77 Vintage, it’s spirited by Ayman’s alter-ego: a mysterious, mind-reading character you’ll see on the tongue of the shoe. Triangular shapes represent protective armour, while subtle tiger stripes hold a secret: they lighten bright blue in UV light. The red blood cells on the outsole show Ayman’s situation, while the words Hope, Strength and Perseverance around his emblem help guide you on your daily travels.

Maylee was born with spina bifida, a disorder where the spine and spinal cord fails to develop completely. She took a lot of operations at OHSU Doernbecher over the years. So it helps enhance her mobility and is now practising using forearm crutches. Maylee plans to open her bakery following her Paralympic career. Which is a piece of great news for humans and canines alike. “I want to make yummy foods for both people and dogs,” she smiled happily.

Maylee’s Nike Court Zoom Vapor Cage 4 packs with personal touches, like hand-drawn stars and a cool marbled outsole featuring all her favourite colours. To help bring attention to adaptive athletics, she includes a spine graphic on the tongue and a blue spina bifida ribbon along the heel. Along with the midsole, you’ll find a quote to Keep Pushing no matter what life throws your way. “That quote helps keep me motivated on the court and in life,” Maylee says. “I thought it might help everyone else, too.”

Cidni was practising soccer when she felt a pain in her chest. By the time she arrived at the sidelines, she had already had a cardiac arrest. Luckily, Cidni’s mom is a pro nurse and was able to do CPR, essentially saving her daughter’s life. Once she came to OHSU Doernbecher, Cidni was diagnosed with anomalous aortic origin of the left coronary artery. And this means that a critical artery supplying blood to her heart attaches in all of the wrong places. And Cidni’s heart wasn’t getting sufficient oxygen, giving dangerously poor cardiac function.

After six months and one major heart surgery, Cidni was back on the field and started playing. To earn the victory for her high school team, the Lebanon Warriors. Her soccer-influenced Air Force 1 Fontanka pays tribute to her teammates, as well as all the beloved animals in her life. 

So now, Cidni is on the road to getting well. So this active, good-natured girl is looking forward to the future and planning to work with horses one day. And so on, she’ll continue to approach every day with the exact positive attitude and fighting spirit that took her this far ahead in life.

Catalina’s love for the Galapagos Islands influences her Nike SB Zoom, Stefan Janoski. Hand-drawn flowers mirror her love of nature, while a butterfly design on the top nods to metamorphosis. “I’ve gone through quite a lot of changes, so I’m sort of like a butterfly,” Catalina said. Ever since then, Those changes have been a continuous part of Catalina’s life. At just three days old, she suffers from Von Hippel-Lindau disease. It is a rare hereditary condition that causes tumours to grow in multiple organs throughout the body. The tumours have affected Catalina’s eyes, spinal cord and brain, requiring five surgeries to remove them.

Catalina continues to emerge despite a difficult medical journey. Like a butterfly and energetic to stay strong and bring attention to her disease while she’s at it. So that’s why you’ll see a DNA helix along the side of her sneaker. As well as a powerful quote from the VHL Alliance: The cure is in our genes. Catalina loves expressing her innovative mind in other ways when she’s not designing shoes. Like drawing realistic sketches of her favourite musicians. However, she also really loves gardening and spending time with her three horses: Kit Kat, KT and Nugget.
