The greatest of heroes are frequently called upon to face the most daunting of difficulties. And that is precisely why Ayman Wamala, who was named to this year's Doernbecher Freestyle team, feels so close to these emblems of bravery. "I really like superheroes because they're always fighting for what's right, no matter how hard things get," Ayman said. "They never give up, and that's something I try to do too." Ayman, 11, was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was just 4 years old. He has shown the same courage as his comic book idols throughout his treatment. Wamala's Nike Blazer Mid 77 Doernbecher Ayman Wamala draws inspiration from his mind-reading alter ego, whose enigmatic allure is reflected in the shoe's deceptively basic appearance.

"It's been really hard, but I've tried to stay positive and just keep fighting," he said. "I'm so excited to design my own shoe because it's going to be a symbol of how far I've come." Wamala was born a superhero with sickle cell anaemia. “When it was at its worst, I felt like I was being hit with a sledgehammer all over my body,” he says. The brave 13-year-old has since been able to pursue his passions in acting, soccer, and cooking while also improving his survival skills, thanks to the brilliant doctors at Doernbecher.  If you want a baggy look go with some jeans and a top. The black upper contains triangular armour hits around the heel and a glow-in-the-dark tiger stripe that extends further forward, revealing itself upon closer inspection. The Swoosh shines in its iridescent finish next to the purple eye stays and stitching, complementing the purple colour of the eyeshadows. The cool tone also emphasizes the shoe's message, which promises "Hope," "Strength," and "Perseverance" alongside "Life is uncertain... make quick judgments in difficult times."
